Certified Journeyman Farrier

Cordero_edited_edited_edited_edited_edit

Cordero is a seasoned farrier with a passion for horses that stems from his upbringing on a cutting horse ranch in Miles City, Montana. Spending his summers riding and assisting with livestock; his strongest memories are of being on the back of a horse riding through the pastures checking cows and fences. After completing high school, Cordero pursued a career as a heavy duty diesel mechanic, working on semi trucks and trailers. However, his love for horses persisted, and he yearned to reconnect with them. Serendipitously, his boss at the time, who was also a family friend and involved in ranch work, recognized Cordero's affinity for horses and proposed the idea of becoming a farrier, stating, "Have you ever thought about shoeing horses? You are built for that profession." Furthering his curiosity, Cordero’s interest was sparked when he attended his first shoeing competition. Despite having little prior knowledge about the field he went to the event to gain insight and evaluate whether it was a path he truly wanted to pursue. During the competition there was a class where competitors could choose someone to assist them in crafting an object within a given timeframe. Curious and eager, Cordero asked for an opportunity to participate. From the moment he swung his first hammer, he knew that he had found his calling. In 2018, Cordero graduated from Five Star Horse Shoeing School and has since become a Certified Journeyman Farrier. What he appreciates most about his profession is the daily variety it offers. While he works with numerous horses and sees them regularly throughout the year, he is continually amazed by the ever-changing nature of their feet. Moreover, Cordero deeply admires horses themselves, considering them to be remarkable creatures. He explains, "They pick up on anything you are putting out there, any feeling that you're feeling—they reflect that right back at you. There is no lying around a horse; they show your true identity." When working with horse owners, Cordero takes the time to understand the specific needs of each horse, whether it's a personal companion or a high-class show horse. He addresses any concerns brought to his attention during visits, consulting with the owners to develop the best shoeing plan tailored to their desired outcomes. To stay abreast of advancements in his field, Cordero remains an active member of the American Farrier Association, regularly attending clinics and participating in competitions. He also surrounds himself with a group of colleagues who are always pushing him to be a better horseshoer. Cordero draws inspiration from several individuals who have played instrumental roles in his journey. Dusty Franklin, his horseshoeing instructor, taught him the fundamental aspects of the farrier industry and emphasized the importance of individuality. Another influential figure is Jason Critton, Cordero's mentor, who deepened his understanding of the mechanical applications of horseshoeing and motivated him to consistently deliver quality work. Cordero's wife also serves as a significant inspiration, holding him accountable and encouraging him to strive for personal and professional growth, never allowing him to give up on his goals. Beyond his work as a farrier, Cordero indulges in various hobbies and interests. He is currently engaged in the restoration of an '84 Camaro, as he likes to tinker on vehicles.
